Chapter 24

“I don’t get it. There’s just more desert for miles,” I say. Sabina and I follow behind Fin as he leads us in the direction of Castle South. If I had to guess, it’s at least a half a day’s walk just to get to a dry mountain range in the distance. No castle in sight.

Fin stops walking and turns to me with knowing eyes, as if I’m just a child who understands nothing. “One thing about rulers who are cruel and good at making many enemies.” He sticks his arm out and it disappears completely. “They’re usually very distrusting, and secretive.”

Fin takes a step forward and his entire body disappears with his arm. I gape at the spot where the Hunter should be, and Sabina grabs my hand. “I’m thinking we should follow him.”

She tugs me forward, through an invisible wall. Moving through the wall is like stepping through something not quite liquid, but not solid either. It’s slow and thick, and if I hadn’t seen Fin go this way, I’d probably turn back.

We pop through the icky molasses and my jaw drops for an entirely new reason. Just ahead of us is a twenty-foot tall iron gate with spikes at the top. And beyond the gate stands a massive castle made of black and gray stone, resting in what looks to be a wide, inactive volcano mouth. The valley within the surrounding mountains is desolate and hot, but somehow the whole place is also frighteningly beautiful.

I look behind me and can see the desert that we traveled through, even my footsteps in the sand. “This is insane,” I say as I look back to the group of men watching us.

Coru nods as he glances back at Castle South. “Tis a damn creepy place, Lass.”

“And one we don’t want to stay at for long,” says Quinlan. “We must find a way inside the gate.”

I nod to the tall golden-haired elf. “How, though?” I look to the left and right, seeing only more of the iron that circles the entire castle. There’s no section where the gate could open at all. The bars are only spread apart enough to maybe fit a small animal through.

Bowen raises his hand, his black eyes looking at each of us. “Has anyone thought of knocking?”

Sabina scoffs. “Oh, genius idea, Hunter. Let’s knock on the Dragon king’s gate and see if he’ll invite us in for some tea.” The sarcasm drips from my friend like a waterfall.

Bowen squares his shoulders and glares down at the beautiful Gypsy, but there’s no mistaking the hint of a smile at the edge of his mouth. “That lovely thing you just stepped through is a ward. You don’t think the king has men monitoring it? There’s eight of us. They have to know we’re here by now.”

It’s silent as we all look at each other, mulling over Bowen’s words. He’s right. If the royals of the South are paranoid enough to put up a magic barrier and a giant iron gate around their home, they aren’t going to easily let people sneak in.
